Weave your favorite movies into your elopement photography

NOTE —

If your blog post's featured images are fairly low resolution, you may want to delete the top image canvas. Your blog will still look gorgeous, but the top banner section looks best when you upload an image that's 2500px on the long side. You can also use our fave TinyJpeg to make them small so your blog posts still load quickly!

How To Elope At The National Gallery Of Art?

January 24, 2025

Are you and your partner dreaming of an intimate elopement that feels like stepping into a timeless painting? Tucked away in the heart of Washington, D.C., the National Gallery of Art offers a one-of-a-kind setting where love and art come together in the most elegant way.

Why Choose the National Gallery of Art Over Other Museums?

From a photographer’s lens, the National Gallery of Art stands apart for its soft, moody lighting that mimics the ambiance of classic oil paintings. Unlike many other museums in D.C., the gallery has minimal natural light—largely due to the era of the artworks on display, many of which hail from the dimly lit centuries of the past.

If you’re after bright, airy wedding photos, this may not be your ideal space. But if you’re drawn to a more dramatic, artistic style with rich shadows and a romantic, old-world feel—this is the perfect place.

Planning Your Elopement at the National Gallery of Art

Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • No Reservation Required. The Gallery is free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—no booking necessary!
  • Travel Light. Avoid carrying too much. Items like phones or wallets in your pockets can show up in photos and be tough to edit out later. I always recommend clients leave essentials like phones, keys, and small purses at the coat check, conveniently located at every entrance.
  • No Bouquets Allowed. Neither fresh nor artificial flowers are permitted inside the museum. I’ve even had fake florals turned away by security—so best to leave those out of your plan.
  • Carry Backpacks on One Shoulder. To protect the artwork, backpacks must be worn on one shoulder—not both.
  • Don’t Worry About Snacks. There are cafés located in each wing, so you can leave food and drinks behind.

How to Get There

There are five entrances to the Gallery, making access easy. You can either drive or take the metro there:

  • Closest Parking Garage: 280 6th St. NW (GPS) / 601 Pennsylvania Ave NW (Street address), approximately $25/day.
  • Nearest Metro Station: Archives–Navy Memorial–Penn Quarter on the Yellow/Green Line.

When’s the Best Time to Elope?

The beauty of this venue? It’s ideal year-round—rain or shine. Weekdays are best if you’re hoping to avoid crowds, especially during popular exhibitions.

During warmer months, I love guiding couples to a nearby outdoor spot just five minutes away, where you can snap dreamy portraits with the U.S. Capitol in the background.

How Much Time Should You Plan for Photos?

The West Wing, where the classical artwork lives, spans two levels and stretches across three city blocks (4th Street to 7th Street). Plan for at least two hours to explore and take photos, plus about 15 minutes for your vow exchange.

If you’re interested in a more modern aesthetic, you can cross the underground tunnel to the East Wing, home to contemporary art and striking architectural lines. Add an extra hour for shooting here.

Finally, I recommend setting aside 30 minutes for outdoor photos—especially if you’d love to include the Capitol as a backdrop in your gallery.

A Photographer with the Experience and Vision to Match Your Love Story

Your epic, romantic elopement at the National Gallery of Art deserves more than just beautiful photos—it deserves a photographer who truly gets your vision. Someone who sees the art in your love story and knows how to capture it with purpose and heart. This is about more than documenting a day—it’s about preserving the emotion, the energy, and all the little in-between moments that make it yours. If you feel like we’d be the perfect fit for your D.C. elopement, I’d love to connect with you here.
